The Manchester Business School name was formed by a merger of the Institute of Innovation Research, The Victoria University of Manchester’s School of Accounting and Finance, UMIST’s Manchester School of Management and Manchester Business School in 2004. However, the beginnings of this school date back to 1824 with a rich heritage. It began when the Manchester Mechanics’ Institute (later known as UMIST) was founded. There is a high standard of admissions requirements for the Manchester Business School. A bachelor degree from a reputable college is required. The GMAT scores should range as follows:
Current class average: 630
Median score: 640
Mid 80% range: 550 – 700
At least 3 years of full-time work experience, after the bachelor degree, is required. Evidence of team-work experience, work-based skills, career achievements, managerial potential and international experience is useful.
The school is also looking for creative thinking or entrepreneurial experience. They want personal attributes, such as maturity and motivation, and to have the potential to enhance the cultural diversity of the class.
English Language skills are most important, as follows:
IELTS: 6.5 with no component less than 6.0 or;
TOEFL iBT: 90 with no component less than 20;
CPE: Minimum grade C
There is an interview by invitation after the evaluation of the application. The interview is conducted by MBS staff or MBA alumni in your own country, on-campus, or by telephone. Face-to-face interviews are preferable. After the interview, the final decision is made by the Admissions Committee. They normally meet every week, so the decision will be reached quickly. All entries are competitive and compared to similar candidates. At times, the Full-time MBA programme will help fulfil the career goals.
For an acceptance, they normally allow four-six weeks to confirm the student’s place. Upon acceptance, a non-refundable first reservation fee is required.
The start date of the Full-time programme is Tuesday, 25 August 2009. The first four weeks cover the Introductory module designed to help settle into the Business School, life in Manchester, and prepare for studies. There is no formal assessment during this time, however, attendance must be mandatory.
