The very first business school to have the honor of being in the spotlight is the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics located in Newark, Delaware, and I must say, the school is pretty impressive. They ranked among the nation’s ‘50 best value’ public universities in The Princeton Review for the year 2009, and they are 1 of 500 institutions throughout the world to be accredited from the AACSB international, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
The tuition for the 2010-2011 school year can vary depending on where you are from and what degree you are pursuing. A full time, undergraduate resident of Delaware pays roughly $20,102 a year, and a nonresident will pay roughly $35,302. I say roughly because tuition depends on the housing option chosen and the type of meal plan selected. A full time, graduate student will pay around $12,479. Students should also keep in mind that you may need around $800 for textbooks and in the ball park of $1,000 to $1,500 for other expenses such as transportation and sundries. The college does offer financial aid if needed.
The Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics offers a wide array of programs to study. Undergraduate students have the option of declaring a major in any of the following programs:
Accounting- Economics

An undergraduate student must declare a major within the first semester of their sophomore year, and they have the option to declare a minor in various fields, as well.

Beyond the programs, the school offers a few different options to further education and experience. The Restaurant and Instructional Management program boasts a hotel and student-run restaurant that provides plenty of hands-on opportunities to work in the field. Another exciting facility the campus has available to students is the Exelon Trading Center which is, as their website says, a “2,200 foot educational trading facility designed to replicate the trading floors in investment banks, brokerage houses, and hedge funds on Wall Street”. There also is the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance where students will find roundtable discussions and conferences, among other guest speakers and presentations. The mission of the center is to propose “progressive changes in corporate structure and management through education, research, and interaction with the business and legal communities”.
Other opportunities can be found in the exceptional experience one gets through the school’s highly regarded study abroad program, as well as the corporate associates programs which are elite internships with the school’s partnering companies. These internships are extraordinary in that the student is paid a stipend and it includes a 100% tuition scholarship if accepted. Students in these programs get the chance to work with companies such as the American Express Financial Advisors; Computer Sciences Corporation, Chemical and Energy Group; and the State of Delaware Treasurer’s Office.
